How our Baking Challenges began…
As a British self taught baker for many years, I’d been guilty of making the same bakes over and over again… Friends would say what a ‘great baker’ I was, but I knew I was limited in my baking skills and knowledge. I found it hard to find inspiration to encourage me to try new bakes…
So began my quest to bake as many different bakes I could, cakes, biscuits, pastries, breads, confectionery, British bakes, American bakes, Canadian bakes, Australian bakes, other international bakes – the list goes on. I found quite quickly that not only did my confidence grow, but the breadth of bakes had really improved all I knew about baking, I found shortcuts, what substitutions worked, how to adjust recipes well and more recently, I’m creating new recipes of my own!
I knew that there would be other home bakers out there with the same dilemma, lots of baking enthusiasm – but just not sure where to start…
I drafted a huge baking bucket list and these bakes have found their way into our 4 Baking Challenges:
- Our first challenge, the original 100 Bakes Challenge, was carefully curated to include a variety of bakes to grow bakers’ confidence whilst offering the greatest breadth of skills, which are all perfectly achievable for the home baker.
- Very quickly this was followed up with the Little Bakes Challenge, a smaller 24 bakes challenge suitable for bakers of all ages, with children in mind. These recipes are easy to make as a family, whilst also teaching little ones confidence with reading recipes and gaining essential baking skills.
- Later we appreciated that there was a huge baking community whose preference was for bread, and indeed that many home bakers aspired to make better bread too… the World Bread Challenge offers 30 breads from all around the world for bakers to make at home.
- Two years on from the release of our first challenge, there were so many bakes that didn’t make the original list…over 100 more… and so here we are in 2022 with the 100 More Bakes Challenge!
